New Haven Police Department Officer Robert Ferraro, age 34, is facing charges of driving under the influence resulting in death and reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm in the Las Vegas crash, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The officer who died in the crash was Joshua Castellano, a seven-year member of the New Haven PD.
The crash happened around 4 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17,
The Metropolitan Police Department said Ferraro was driving a Rolls-Royce Cullinan at a high rate of speed, and struck a parked Ford Mustang, along with a fire hydrant and utility poles, the news outlet reported.
The Rolls-Royce then flipped over, and a man was thrown from the passenger seat. He later died at the hospital, the Review-Journal reported.
There were two other men and two women in the SUV, police said. Those passengers and Ferraro sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Castellano had been assigned to the Shooting Task Force, New Haven Police said.
"At this time, we ask for support as our entire department is in shock and grieving," New Haven PD Public Information Officer Scott Shumway said on Sunday, Sept. 19.
Ferraro is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
